Istria is in the top north western corner of Croatia. It can be reached in about an hour from Trieste airport, so is easily accessible. It has not recently been a vacation choice for northern Europeans for obvious reasons, although it is extemely popular with Italians, especially during August. In fact Italian is the joint language of the region.

We went because our son works for a British holiday company as a rep, and for the past 3 years has worked in Rovinj and Porec. We went to visit him and to experience first hand the region.

We were delighted with the place, it has a character of its own, not spoiled (yet) by tourism and in fact there is still some suspicion of tourists. Outside of August it is quiet and enjoyable.

There is enough to do, at least for a week, although the beaches are nothing special. Food has a very strong Italian influence, but the restaurants retain their socialist past by all offering the same menu at the same price.

Local wine can be excellent.
