This monument is way past due. It is in rememberance to the Indians who lived here in the Black Hills a long time ago. The Black Hills were and are sacred to the American Natives, and this monument is to remind us of that. It took 50 years to get it hewn into the mountain and is not even close to being finished. I took this picture from inside the visitors center, where it showed the model, and in the background is the real statue, unfinished. It is so massive, the hole under the arm will fit a 10 story building. It is surrounded by woods and mountains. Absolutely amazing.
