Why Haven't I Heard of Walhalla Before?
Sightseeing in Bavaria picture - Walhalla, as far as I'd known previously, was simply the Norse heaven. Well, you should know that this monument, perched high atop a hill east of Regensburg on the Danube, shares its name with that old Viking mythology. A short scenic cruise starting just below the Steinebrucke takes you to the foot of this magnificent bit of (surprisingly recent) Bavarian history. Inside reside the busts of a large number of German heroes of the past, and there is room for future addition, thanks to the foresight of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria. Ludwig began accepting designs in 1814 and the monument was first opened to the public in 1842.
