The Youth Hostels Association of India, Maharashtra cell had organised a trek to the Valley of Flowers (Garhwal region, State Uttaranchal of India) starting first week of August,2001. The itenary included the valley, Hemkund saheb, Badrinath, Kedarnath, Rishikesh and Haridwar.
The valley of flowers is situated at an altitude of around 10000 feet; and can be reached on feet or horse from a place enroute to Badrinath called Govindghat. During the winter months, the entire region is covered in thick snow and cannot be reached. The season for the flowers lasts from April to September every year. During different times out of these; one can see different flower varieties. In all, it is said, there are over 600 species of flowers living in the region.
And trust me, they are just amazing! A strech of nearly 10 kilometers (I am not sure about the width) is a house to loads of flower and plant species. A place definitely recommended for a visit!! The pictures will speak the rest, I am sure.
