Istanbul
North Africa/Middle East picture - So, after two hot and humid days in Bangkok, enjoying the sandalwood aromas and fiery curries, it was finally time to go to the Middle East, and begin the main part of the holiday. The plan was to spend a week and a bit touring Turkey, then fly down to Israel and Egypt for another six weeks. I remember writing on the day, which was Tuesday, December 29, 1992: "There was snow on the ground in Istanbul; my first impression of the city was of it being very quaint and European, a great place to visit. We went inside Sancta Sofia (pictured), and the Blue Mosque, then saw some ancient Egyptian obelisks in the Hippodrome, and walked around some of the surrounding streets." This photo was taken inside the Sancta Sophia, and shows some frescoes located there.
