We were staying at the Yucelt Interyouth Hostel, 6/1 Sultanahmet, located in the heart of the old city. While the staff could be surly, on New Years Eve they held a particularly lively and friendly party -- there was a belly dancer a Turkish MC (pictured) who did a little dance, before asking everyone in the audience to sing their national anthem. Later some early 90s techno music got put on, and everyone started dancing.
