Despite the uncertainities of the Age of Terrorism, the Middle East remains a great place for budget travellers. As well as cheap accommodation, food and transport, the local people you meet are invariably friendly and welcoming. On a friendliness scale, I would have to award the Egyptians the first place. When it comes to exotic sightseeing attractions, Egypt comes first as well. Naturally, the Pyramids of Giza are an awe-inspiring site, and shouldn't be missed, despite all the hassles you get from guides and touts and taxi drivers there.
