01/23/93 -- After several days cruising the Nile, it was time to regain land -- and landfall was regained at a suitably squalid little town called Edfu. We got a taxi there to Luxor, passing on the way through some of the best scenery I have seen in the Middle East. The sight of verdant sugar-cane fields, dusty donkeys trotting along the roads, and the occasional shabby block of flats rising from the countryside was a fantastic experience of the developing world.
