<noembed><nolayer><div style="position:absolute; left:0; top:-100; display:none;"> Into Berber Africa --- Siwa Oasis<br> North Africa/Middle East picture - 01/31/93 -- After swanning around Cairo for a week or so, it was time this morning to begin a new adventure, and delve further into Africa and in particular the interesting world of the Berbers. With my felucca friends we caught a bus from Marsa Matrouch complete with TV and toilet (I was impressed), me sitting next to an Israeli/American guy, Nivvy. We passed the Pyramids and some interesting Nile greenery on the trip north and around the outskirts of Alexandria; then got into flat, boring, rocky desert country dotted with pigeon lofts and small towns. Marsa was a bit of a shithole, but with its donkeys and Mediterrenean beach, made for another Egyptian experience. It was nothing to compare with the eventual nightime arrival in Siwa, with its old mud city (pictured above), and its colorful Berber inhabitants. </div></nolayer></noembed>
