I must here add that this Middle Eastern Sojourn constituted my first ever overseas trip, and so it had an unusually strong effect on me. I was a travel virgin, and there is nothing like the first time! I was travelling with my university buddy, Garnet Mae. On the way to Turkey, the first leg of the Middle Eastern adventure, we stopped off in Bangkok. This photo shows a typical budget hotel in Khao San Rd, Banglamphu -- note the hole in the roof, and the tropical trees outside! We arrived in Bangkok on the night of December 26, 1993. I was blown away by my introduction to Asia -- the sheer exoticness of the place was intoxicating, like ingesting a strange drug.
