Catskills in Autumn

Slide Mountain Loop, October 2001. This circular loop is about eighteen miles from start to finish, with some steep climbs and incredible views. We found great places to camp on Giant Ledge, and on the coll between Cornell and Slide.

the trail

I was wondering how challenging that trail was. The one from the photo that you headed out on.... I did devils path which is near devils tombstone campground and i found that to be very steep and challenging.. Can you compare the two .. that is if you went on devils path...

This is Dave, founder of worldisround.com. Our summer cottage happens to be in Phoenicia, a part of the world which our friend Cynthia accurately describes as a "secret". These beautiful photographs give some sense of just how amazing this place only 2 hours north of the city can be. I keep saying I'm going to do Giant Ledge at "peak" foliage, but I keep missing it. Congrats on doing the entire 18-mile run. I took the easy way up (Slide from the East, via the more interesting roundabout route, and Cornell from the west, from the Woodland Valley campground--it's great scrambling up over the those rock formations.) Have you guys done the full Escarpment Trail (trail 40 off 23A) and hiked up Caterskill Falls?
