Sa'adi, one of Iran's greatest poets, was born in ca 1213 AD in Shiraz, known as the city of poets, roses and nightingales. He is best known for his great works, "The Bostan" ("The Tree Garden") which is a philosophical and epic poem that expresses Muslim virtues, and "The Golestan" ("The Rose Garden") which is a collection of poems and prose documenting his travels through India and Central Asia. This famous verse of Sa'adi is imprinted at the entry of the United Naions' headquarters in New York City: "Of one Essence is the human race, thus has Creation put the Base; One Limb impacted is sufficient, For all Others to feel the Mace."
