Spectacular Persian rug
North Africa/Middle East picture - Iran is the home of the original oriental carpet, and the history of the Persian carpet, also known as the "Oriental Carpet", dates back to more than 2500 years ago. In 1949 the oldest known handknotted Persian carpet was discovered some 5000 feet up in the Altai mountains of Siberia, preserved in the frozen tombs of Scythian chiefs. It is known as the "Pazyryk carpet". The Scythians were an ancient East-Iranian people who inhabited a vast territory stretching from Siberia to Southern Russia. Although many countries have adopted the tradition of weaving Persian carpets, even in our times, Iranians are still considered the master weavers and the quality of Iranian carpets speaks for itself.
