Mount Damavand - Northern Iran
North Africa/Middle East picture - Photo: Jorge --- With an altitude of 5671 m (18,602 ft), it stands majestically as Iran's highest mountain, and one of the highest in the world. The mountain is also of great national sentimental value to Iranians as it appears in Iranian legends and mythology and in the national epic work of Iran's great epic national poet, Ferdowsi, the "Shahnameh" ("Book of Kings") In times when Tehran's air was not as polluted as today, when I was a kid, one could see Mt. Damvand from almost all over the capital.
