Valasht Lake - Northern Iran
North Africa/Middle East picture - Photo: Ali Majdfar http://www.pbase.com/k_amj/root --- Wild horses grazing in the North-Iranian Caspian highlands. It was around here that Louise Firouz in 1965 rediscovered the Caspian horse which was thought to have been extinct for thousands of years. The Caspian horse is considered to be one of the absolutely finest horses. Although Mrs. Firouz discovered that they indeed were not extinct as was previously believed, no more than 30 of them had survived. Today they are bred in captivity in a few countries in the West and cost a fortune. You can read more about this fascinating story here: http://www.caspians.com/rediscovery.htm
