Arbroath is situated on Scotland's east coast. In 1320 the Arbroath Declaration, also known as the Declaration of Scottish Independence, was signed in the Abbey by 38 Scots lords and sent to Pope Paul XXII. Some say it inspired the drafters of the US Declaration of Independence.

The town has a long fishing tradition although the industry is in decline. Its most famous product is the Arbroath Smokie.
