Merida in the state of Yucatan, located in the NW corner of the Yucatan Peninsula, was founded by the Spaniard, Francisco de Montejo on January 6, 1542. Montejo was the conqueror of Yucatan.

At the time the Spaniards arrived, Merida was a large Mayan city called T'ho.
