Jacques Cartier's tomb, St. Malo
Brittany picture - Jacques Cartier, was born in St. Malo in 1491, the year before Columbus discovered the New World. Forty-four years later he sailed his own ship to the New World, searching for a Northwest Passage to China, but discovering the St. Lawrence River instead and creating the basis for France's claim to Canada. Cartier died in St. Malo in 1557, and is buried beneath this floral tribute in St. Vincent Cathedral. It was only fitting that after German-occupied St. Malo was destroyed by Allied bombs during World War II, it was rebuilt largely through the efforts of Canadian investors.
