Rideau Hall
Government Buildings in Ottawa picture - Surrounded by a magnificent 79 acre (30+ hectares) park, this is the official residence of the Governor General of Canada. It was built with 11 rooms in 1838 for Thomas Mackay, a prominent Scottish stonemason and mill owner. In 1867 it was bought for $82,000 by the Government of Canada as the permanent official residence for the Governor General. Since then, the stone building has been enlarged several times, most recently in 1914, to better fulfill its role as one focal point of political, diplomatic and social life in the capital. The grounds are open to the public.
