The massive fortress-like Ontario Provincial Courthouse was opened in 1986 right beside what is now the City Hall. It replaced a former courthouse built around 1870. It holds thirty-five court rooms, registry offices, and the various services normally required in such a complex. Security was a major part of the design, both for the movement of apprehended persons and the protection of judges.
