It was built in 1914 for an Ottawa grocer, and named after the ancestral home of its next residents. It is best known for its role as the refuge during World War II for Crown Princess Juliana of the Netherlands and her daughters, one of whom was born in Ottawa. It became the residence of the Official Leader of the Opposition in 1950, after concerned citizens raised money for that purpose. After being maintained by donations for twenty years, in 1970 it was acquired by the Government of Canada for one dollar. </div></nolayer></noembed>
