National War Memorial
Government Buildings in Ottawa picture - About 70 feet (21 metres) high, it resulted from a world-wide competition held in 1925. It was unveiled by King George VI in 1939, ironically just shortly before World War II began. It consists of a granite arch featuring bronze figures representing Peace and Freedom. A nationally televised Remembrance Day ceremony is held here every November 11. The War's longest conflict, the five-year Battle of the Atlantic, is also commemorated here on the first Sunday in May.
