Geographical location, north of the Equator in the tropic is a very favorable for tourist destination.
Historicaly, before the arrival of the Spanish, Yucatan was the place of a great Mayan civilization. The Mayan indepedent spirit seen as a Mayan Resistance to Spanish as well as a Mexican rule perpetuated into the early 20th century.
