The hypothesis which leaves the least scope for doubt, however, identifies Biduino, who was then active in the area of Pisa, as the architect of the Tower. The decorations of the basement order reveal notable similarities with Biduino's most well known work. However, here too the lack of corroborating documents and convincing comparisons renders the attribution very hazardous. Thus, notwithstanding hypotheses and conjectures of various levels of reliability, the identity of the architect of the Tower would seem, at least for the moment, to be destined to remain a mystery.
