Like the other buildings in the Piazza, the bell tower is the fruit of a long building project, extending over two centuries. Rather than to a succession of individuals, ideas and projects, the historical stratification of building works on the Tower seems to be related to a large extent to the problems brought about by its progressive inclination. However, to this day, there are no entirely reliable clues to help answer questions related to the phases and methods of the Tower's construction, its progressive inclination and, ultimately, the identity of its architect.
