These difficulties, principally related to the lack of documentary material and buildings which could be convincingly compared with the Tower, have caused this building, while one of the most famous in the world, to become one of the most problematic and obscure: undoubtedly this adds to the fascination which the Tower exerts upon visitors and scholars, but at the same time it leads to difficulties in the historical study of the monument and in the develoment of measures to be taken to ensure its survival. At any rate, stylistic analysis of the structure and its decorations, the few documents in our possession and the measurement of the different attempts at "correction" (i.e. adjustments to the vertical axis of the structure) confirm that the phases of construction must have been more than one, separated, according to hypotheses, by intervals of different duration or periods of slackening during construction work.
