Now what the heck is "plate tectonics?" Well, if you've travelled to Peru & its neighboring Pacific-coast countries, it's quite likely that you've heard of the "Nazca plate." But if you've travelled to North America's Pacific coast, then you've most likely heard of "the Pacific plate" or "Juan de Fuca plate." The same goes to the island-nations of Asia Pacific where the "Pacific plate " stretches since it's the biggest of all plates. As for the Himalayas, you've most likely heard of the "Australian-Indian plate" which gave rise to Mt. Everest & the entire Himalayas. Overall, the earth is geographically divided into several plates which gave rise to the mountain ranges & volcanoes of the planet.
