Madagascar: life in the villages

This collections of photos is mainly devoted to the people I met in the various villages during my journey: it's a gallery of faces and expressions from extraordinary people, always kind and simple, not yet ruined by mass tourism. Of course children were the most attracted by our presence and the most spontaneous and joyful in their attitude, so most of this collections is dedicated to them. Re: the photo, "the painted girl", I didn't know till I traveled in this area, that many of the world's people "paint" their faces with this powder(?) for a "sun block". They've never had an experience with ours!!

By the way... how do you take these pictures? do you ask the people if you can take pictures of them? if so what is their general reaction to that? do most of your subjects like to be photographed?

Wow!!! your pictures are gorgeous!! I'm going to spend 10 weeks in Madagascar this summer in a small village between Andavadoaka and Ampasilava about 250km North of Toliara and 45km South of Morombe to do some marine bio conservation research :-) I can't wait!

I looked at these again, today, and again, I marveled at them ALL! The people look happy and satisfied with their lives, they don't think they are "deprived"!! I have heard tho', the forests are being cut down there, this is a bad trend...Thanks once again, for sharing these terific photos with us!!!

Ciao Andrea, ti scrico in italiano sperando che tu lo sia, a giudicare dal nome non dovrei sbagliare. Inutile dire che anch'io sono un fotoamatore e che mi complimento con te per le belle immagini. Sto imbastendo un programma di massima per visitare il Madag, purtroppo da solo ma con le mie Nikon. Volevo chiederti, se non ti e' di troppo disturbo, come e' la situazione laggiu', che difficolta' si possono trovare, e se vale la pena di appoggiarsi ad una agenzia del posto. Io vorrei partire in gennaio perche' ad aprile devo essere in NZ per fotografare l'autunno e i suoi panorami, ma so' che che in Mad e' la stagione delle piogge, hai qualche consiglio ? Human values on display
Thanks, Andrea, for this visit to Madagascar. Elias says below that something is "different here than other photos." I think it is your ability to convey human values. My favorites are "Fort Dauphin Bay" for its depiction of how nature impacts on man; "Carts," for its unusual perspective; "Playing on the beach" for the patterns of people and the water; "Girl" for its expression;and "Brother and Sister," for its intimacy.
