Quebec City is the oldest city in Quebec. It was founded in 1608, almost 80 years after the first French explorers visited the area. The French and British contested what is now Canada for years, with the British finally settling the matter in 1759, in a short battle on the Plains of Abraham, just outside the walled upper city. Today the city showcases its French origins in language, culture and architecture.
