If you look back at the Sumatran map, the 3 islands of the western coast off Sumatra are the fascinating Mentawi islands. Here, the people are very traditional with customs & culture pre-dating the arrival of Islam in Indonesia. Hence, you not only get the fabulous Islamic culture & architectures here in Sumatra but also, you get traditional custom & culture as well. However, you'll have to go to seldomly-visited Mentawi islands to see it.
