The port district was once part of the massive, star-shaped fortification that King Christian IV wanted to make Copenhagen an invincible fortress. Commerce won out over strategy, however, and the well equiped port replaced the bastillion. This old port area had fallen into disrepair and disrepute, but was gentrified and revitalized in the 1980's and now features parks, warehouses converted to chic apartments and fine stores of all kinds. People live on boats and barges on the canals.
