Peterhof, about 20 miles from St. Petersburg on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland, was founded by Peter the Great in the early 18th century. On July 10th, 1762, Catherine II rushed from here on a horse, galloping to St. Petersburg to proclaim herself the Empress. For over 200 years Peterhof was used for official ceremonies, lavish feasts and formal receptions.
