this is how many chinese bathrooms in the countryside are set up. this one wasn't particularly bad. (i don't think it had seen a lot of use in the past few days). so i didn't feel bad posting a picture of it. chinese bathrooms are not for the faint of heart. besides the obvious noxious fumes there can also be some sizeable spiders and other unpleasantries. for those of you that are really interested, beneath the cutout, there is only a concrete slide at a 45 degree angle, and no running water, so things "stick" around for awhile. but enough about that...
