The Pension Augsburg was one and a half blocks away from the train station. We found it, got settled and headed back out to sightsee into town. We walked past the Viktalmarkt with fruit, vegetables and plant stands and continued on until we found the Stadt Museum which we toured. We then went to the Asamkirche (the Asam Church). Here we saw the greatest display of rococo yet!!
On to Marienplatz to the Rathaus and the famous Glockenspiel with revolving figures. We entered Dallmayer's Delicatessen - probably the grandest deli with marble and cherubs and a fantastic display of goodies. We then made our way to the famous Hofbrau House where Bob got a 2-liter stein of beer. (they don't have smaller sizes) and we shared a very large pretzel, listened to the oompah pah band and enjoyed watching the crowd.
Our trip to Munich included a trip to visit a friend from my childhood. We contacted him and his wife, were invited to dinner and got directions to their home in Grunwald. That evening we were met by our hosts at the station. We toured their beautifully landscaped garden of statuary and many varieties of roses, a vegetable garden and a lovely rock garden. On their patio we were honored to have a vintage wine opened just for me - it was delicious. I would have recognized this friend of long ago anywhere; what a lovely visit with an old friend.
When we returned to Marienplatz, we made our way to the Residence Treasury Museum where the crown jewels are kept and then the Curvallis Theater which was also designed by the Asam Brothers who designed the rococo church. This theater was awesomely beautiful - what a place to see an opera. It is, however, quite small and intimate.
DACHAU, GERMANY
The weather was appropo - dismal, rainy and cold. We made our way along with a bus load of young people of many nationalities. Approximately 95% were young people. Dachau cannot be explained - it must be visited.
