Head of Father Hidalgo
Guanajuato picture - Father Hidalgo's peasant army of 80,000 was no match for the Royalist army of 6,000. After suffering a disastrous defeat outside of Guadalajara in 1811, he fled north toward the U.S. and was apprehended, defrocked, and executed. His head and the heads of his comrade revolutionary leaders were returned to the Alhondiga where they were hung on hooks at the corners of the building for over ten years.
