Located at the western extremity of Lake Geneva (or 'Lac Léman' as we say here), in the southwest of Switzerland, between the Alps and the Jura mountains, and almost encased into French territory (the canton shares more kilometres of borderline with France than with its immediate Swiss neighbour, Vaud, respectively 102.5 and 4.5 km), the city of Geneva is divided by the Rhône River into two parts that are almost equal, the 'rive gauche' and the 'rive droite' (the left and right banks, which are south and north of the Rhône).
