Sightseeing in Bavaria picture - Munich owes its name and existence to a tiny settlement of monks near the banks of the Isar more than 1200 years ago. Their monastery and the little village which grew up around it was referred to as "Munichen", "the monks". Or in modern German: "München". Munich is the third largest city in Germany. It is the capital of Bavaria and an important center of trade, manufacture, and fashion.
