Hazel Creek, located on the North Shore of Fontana Lake in the Great Smoky Mountians National Park. N.C. was the location of many thriving communities until the Tennessee Valley Authority forced the residents to leave their homes to make way for the Fontana Dam in 1943.The Dam is the highest dam east of the Rockies. The dam is 480 feet high and is 11,685 acres of water surface. Fontana provides great recreational water activities such as boating and skiing along with Pike and Bass Fishing. Hazel Creek has miles and miles of hiking and campgronds. Fly fishing for rainbow trout is excellent. Hazel Creek is cut off from the outside world because the lake covered the only access road, but some of the old cemeteries and roads still remain there. You could walk for days. Rent a boat at the dock to get to Hazel Creek.
