Close up of the Padrao dos Descobrimentos. The Discoveries Monument is made of limestone and was inaugurated in 1960 and is listed today as a Unesco World Heritage site. The monument is shaped like a ship with some of Portugal's famous discoverers peering out over the brow including Henry the Navigator in the front, followed by Vasco da Gama and others on either side of the structure.
