In October 2001, I travelled to Austria with my parents. We wanted to visit Austria by our own means and made sure we visited all the corners of this beautiful country.
We started our trip with two days in Vienna. After that, we rented a car for two weeks of travel across the Country. We returned to Vienna after for a final 2 days.
We found the country to be extremely safe, at times even too quiet, as people seemed to dissapear to quickly in the evenings. I recommand that you travel by car in this country as it`s the way you`ll see the most. However, you`ll need not to be afraid to drive in tiny mountain roads and learning a few words in German for the road signs may be helpful.
We particularly enjoyed the following attractions. Some are off the tourist track and are certainly worth of interest: Vienna, Burgenland region (Rust esp.), City of Graz, The Grossglockner road (a must), The Vorarlberg region, Salzburg, the Salzkammergut region (particularly Hallstaatt!) and Melk on the Danube.
