Tehran picture - Construction on the Trans-Iranian Railway started in 1927 on the orders of the Iranian monarch of the time, Reza Shah Pahlavi (aka "Reza Shah the Great") The railway was inaugurated in 1939. During the second world war, the the Trans-Iranian Railway was essential as a transportation means used by the allied forces to supply the Eastern Front against Germany. The railway is 1394 kilometers (865 miles) long, and passes through some extremley rough mountanaious terrain.
