Photos Being Recovered

Tuesday, Apr 14, 2009
by Michael McDonald

Yesterday I relocated all of the photo servers from a datacenter in Fremont, California to a new datacenter in San Jose. Unfortunately one of the big (2 terabyte) storage arrays died somewhere along the way.

All Worldisround photos are backed up so no data should have been lost. Most photos are still viewable, and new articles and uploads are not effected.

Ordering replacement hardware is my #1 priority. Installation and setup could take an additional day of work (a lot of that waiting for the array to 'do it’s thing'.) I am hoping to have Worldisround completely back to normal by Friday.

Some of the older photos on the site are not visible right now. (I.e. they are backed up, but not ‘live’.) My #2 priority is to make these photos viewable again.

UPDATE 4/16/2009:
The new hardware has arrived and will be installed today. Recovery of photo data from backups is underway (this takes a LONG time).

UPDATE 4/20/2009:
The recovery of old photos is still underway (all that image processing takes days to execute.) Unfortunately I have confirmed that a large number of recent photos were permanently lost in the incident. If you have photos missing that were uploaded in the last couple weeks but have disappeared, they are probably lost. This pains me a great deal, and I am trying to figure out how to accommodate the effected authors.
(And yes, you can safely upload new photos.)

UPDATE 4/30/2009:
The recover of old photos finished a while ago, so if your photos are still missing they have been permanently lost. Sorry :(

  • Missing Photo

I loaded “Baja: Among the great Whales” some time ago. All of a sudden photos are missing. There is no order to the missing pix, i.e., they do not appear to have been part of a block of contingent data.Is it possible to try to reload the missing photos (assuming I can find copies)?

  • Only 18 Albums?

    Only 18 albums Jody?

Now that’s not very much, is it?

  • Yea

I am very pleased to say that some of my photos came back. I only had to re load 18 albums.
    Cheers

  • Thanks for the update Michael,
I think my last two articles may have been lost but, they can just as easily be uploaded. But I’ll wait until after the 24th, they may just be recovered by then.
