Worldisround Weekend Outage

Thursday, Jun 24, 2010
by Michael McDonald

On last Thursday morning (June 17), both power supplies in the main server died and Worldisround was unreachable. I ordered a new power supply, which arrived Monday morning and installed it around noon and brought Worldisround back online.

I apologize for the huge interruption of service that this caused and any worries about Worldisround or your photos. No data was lost, and I am making plans to switch Worldisround over to a cloud computing architecture so that these types of hardware failures are no longer an issue.

  • repeat posts

Sorry for the repeats but when I posted the first time, there was a message that a critical error occurred and to notify the site manager. It didn’t post anything until now.

  • I apologize for the downtime in the last couple days. I needed access to an old account (the domain name registrar) which only David Hariton (the original founder/owner of Worldisround) had access to. David didn’t get back to me until today to give me access.

  • Site down

The site was down for nearly two days on Feb 18 and 19, and could not be reached! These disruptions are occurring frequently, and, like many other users, I have paid money to the hosting company for an upgraded account. I am considering cancelling my account, after some ten years, as the irregular service is extremely disappointing. It seems to me that the site owner should either resolve these technical issues or close down the service entirely.

  • All photos missing

Is the problem of our almost 6,700 photos on the site not loading being addressed?

  • Fixed, again. I apologize for the problems--the hardware is a decade old (Worldisround has been around for 12 years!) and needs to be replaced soon.

  • Yes, I am in the process of replacing the main photo server. Sorry for the interruption.

  • Many photos are missing

A few days ago I noticed all of my articles are missing all the photos. This seems to effect only photos added before more than a week or so ago. I think you have lost a server.

  • I never heard of a “cloud computing architecture”, but hope it will make a big difference, in preventing any bad experiences! Thanks a lot for this very good & interesting site, Michael!! E. Robb erobb19@cox.net
